Greenville Community Christian Church History
The history of GCCC dates back to 18th century when Mason, NH included the town and village (what is today Greenville, NH). GCCC was created from two previous churches, the Congregational Church of Mason Village and the First Calvinistic Church of Mason Village. These two churches had ably ministered to Greenville since 1753 and 1828, respectively. The current GCCC meetinghouse was first used on Wednesday Dec 16, 1827 for the public prayer and worship. These two churches enjoyed friendly cooperation for many years where they reached the people of Greenville and surrounding areas with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Due to this Godly union between the churches, a discussion arose in the early 20th century to perhaps federate the two congregations into one in order to capably continue to meet the needs of their members and the wider community. Nothing was resolved even though pastors from both congregations exchanged filling the pulpits from time to time. However, as God’s providence would have it the two churches were left with a major decision when the meetinghouse of the Congregational Church burnt down due to dry and windy conditions on April 19, 1919. Articles of Federation were drafted and the two churches unanimously adopted them on July 7, 1919 just a few months after the disastrous fire. The new church was called the Federated Church of Greenville.
Each church maintained their own membership to their respective Congregational and Baptist church as well as a membership in the new Federated Church. It was agreed that upon a pastoral vacancy, the Federated Church would employ a Congregational minister and then a Baptist one, going back and forth as the position was vacated. This worked well into the latter 20th century. The Federated Church had many capable and Godly ministers over the years since each church’s founding all the way through the Federated union. Yet, the history of GCCC took another turn in the year 2000 when the members of the three churches merged and united under one new name which encapsulated the vision of the church to embrace the name Greenville Community Christian Church. We pray for the wisdom, care, and guidance of the Lord God through the next century as we seek to glorify God, love Him and His ways as well as love our neighbors as Jesus Christ has taught us to do.
